Astria VPN on Samsung Smart TV: how to protect your TV traffic

Samsung Smart TVs run Tizen, which cannot install VPN apps. Here is what works instead: an Android TV box or stick with Astria VPN plugged into the TV.

Samsung Smart TVs cannot run Astria VPN directly: they use Samsung's own operating system, Tizen, which does not support installing VPN apps — from us or from any other provider. The practical way to use Astria VPN with a Samsung TV is to plug a small Android TV device into it and run the app there. This article explains the options and what each one protects.

Why there is no VPN app for Samsung Smart TV

Astria VPN apps for TVs are built for Android TV (installer files for 32-bit and 64-bit devices). Samsung Smart TVs run Tizen, a different system with its own app store, and Tizen does not let apps create a VPN connection. So no installer exists that you could put on a Samsung TV — if someone offers one, it is either a plug-in streaming device or something that will not work.

What works: an Android TV device plugged into the Samsung TV

Connect an Android TV box or stick to the TV with an HDMI cable, switch the TV to that HDMI input and install Astria VPN on the device. These devices work well with the app:

  • Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer — use the 32-bit build.
  • Xiaomi Mi Box S — use the 32-bit build.
  • Many Android TV boxes on Amlogic S905X3 and similar chips — usually the 32-bit build.
  • Nvidia Shield TV — works with the 64-bit build (the 32-bit build works too).

Not sure which build your device needs? Our guides explain how to check it and walk through the installation: Android TV (32-bit) guide and Android TV (64-bit) guide. The app signs in with a QR code from your phone, you choose a country and press Connect.

What the VPN on the box protects — and what it does not

The VPN protects the traffic of the device it runs on. Apps you open on the Android TV box (the player, the browser, the apps you install there) go through Astria VPN. The Samsung TV's own built-in apps — the ones on the Samsung home screen — keep using your normal internet connection, because the VPN is not on the TV itself. If you want a given service protected, open it on the Android TV box.

Other ways you may have read about

  • VPN on the router. It protects every device at home, the Samsung TV included. Astria VPN does not offer a router setup today, so we cannot recommend this as an Astria VPN method.
  • Sharing a computer's VPN connection over Wi-Fi. It is possible in principle, but it is not an officially supported Astria VPN scenario and we have not tested it with our apps.

Local rules

Astria VPN exists to protect your personal data and traffic privacy. Rules on using a VPN differ between countries and can change, so check the local rules where you are — following them remains the user’s responsibility.

No. Samsung Smart TVs run Tizen, which does not support VPN apps. Use an Android TV box or stick plugged into the TV.

Which device should I buy to use Astria VPN with my Samsung TV?

Any Android TV or Google TV device that accepts our installer: for example Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer or Xiaomi Mi Box S (32-bit build), or Nvidia Shield TV (64-bit build). Check the guides for the exact steps.

Will the VPN protect the Samsung TV's built-in apps?
